AFGHANISTAN / IRAQ: Afghan students ‘in doldrums’ at Iraqi university

Afghan students from the American University of Afghanistan, who were previously evacuated to the American University of Iraq after Kabul fell to the Taliban in August 2021, say they are not getting the education they need to progress.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong's Chinese University to start patriotic 'national security education'

The Chinese University of Hong Kong will impose the ruling Chinese Communist Party's patriotic education program on all students starting in the fall of 2022. Every student will be required to complete the course "Understanding China Today" in order to graduate.

GREECE: Greece begins training of a permanent police group in universities [SPANISH]

Police officers assigned to the protection of universities in Greece began training in response to the continued occupations of campuses by protesters. Up until now, police in Greece could only access universities if there were indications of a crime or if their presence was requested by the university.

PAKISTAN: SC asks courts to respect universities’ powers

The Supreme Court of Pakistan issued a judgment stating that every university has the right to set out its disciplinary and other policies in accordance with the law, and that unless any policy goes against the fundamental rights of the students or violates any law, courts should exercise self-restraint in such matters.

UNITED STATES: Judge will decide soon on whether free speech violated at UF

A federal judge criticized an attorney for the University of Florida during a hearing on whether six faculty members' free speech rights were infringed upon after the lawyer accused some of the professors of having no standing to make their cases because they had violated school policy.

EVENT: As One Year of Imprisonment Approaches, CEU Hosts Free Ahmed Samir! Online Conference

In February 2021, Ahmed Samir Santawy, Egyptian student and researcher at Central European University in Vienna, was arbitrarily detained and imprisoned by the Egyptian government. As one year since Ahmed’s disappearance approaches, CEU will host the Free Ahmed Samir! Conference on Academic Freedom in Egypt on January 25 to consider why university peers are being imprisoned and what can be done about it.

AFGHANISTAN: Private higher education providers battle for survival

Officials at a number of private universities in Kabul told University World News that private institutions are struggling to survive as they are facing a dramatic drop in the number of students enrolled. Private institutions have continued to operate while there have been no signs of resumption of studies at public universities.
